Heaton Intermediate School

HMOA developed a master plan for the school, encompassing both new and refurbished buildings. A pragmatic approach was required due to the age and condition of the existing buildings. The master plan was focussed on the provision of teaching space arranged to suit the house structure and encourage wider collaboration and interaction.

Heaton Normal Intermediate School in Merivale, Christchurch, was named after Sir Heaton Rhodes, who donated the land for the school. The school is over 70 years old and sits in place of the former Heaton Rhodes homestead. Although the original home was demolished prior to the construction of the school, a number of the original trees remain.
