Bowen Campus Redevelopment

Unbuilt Project, Wellington

Back to projects

A collaboration with CCM Architects to jointly design the largest single office development yet proposed in New Zealand. A campus of four large office buildings with a central eight-story glazed atrium forming a central ‘street’, including cafes and landscaped areas, connects all four structures.

In 2015, Precinct Properties embarked on a full transformation of the site known as Bowen Campus, rejuvenating both the Bowen State Building and the adjacent Charles Fergusson Tower (CFT) to meet current government office accommodation standards.

The Bowen State Building upgrade involved the complete refurbishment, seismic reinforcement and extension of the existing 10-storey building. Working in partnership with Wellington City Council the new design paid homage the original brutalist style by carefully articulating the façade and major structural components through sculpting and scale and proportion. The campus also redirected its entrance back to the Terrace and created a direct relationship back to Parliament.

Located in the Parliamentary Precinct in central Wellington, the project was designed to meet the New Zealand Green Building Council ‘5 Green Star’ rating for environmentally sustainable design.
